Welcome to the website for Saint Anne’s Catholic Church in historic Columbia, California. Saint Anne’s is the first brick church built in California. (The Serra chapel at the mission in San Juan Capistrano completed in 1806 is believed to be the oldest church in California but that is made out of adobe). This website is maintained by a preservation committee which is a registered 501 (c )(3) entity. The committee works to keep the church open as a working church as well as to preserve the historical nature of the church.
We have designed this website to provide you with the historical background of the church, as well as the city of Columbia and the surrounding area with its gold mining history. We also have designed the site to provide you with information about the modern working church with weddings, summer docent tours, school tours and all the current activities in the church. We hope that you will find the church worthy of your contributions.
We wish you will review the history of the preservation committee and consider joining the committee in the continuing work to maintain the church. You can find information in this website ranging from the biography of the original bishop who began the church, to the movies filmed in the area, to the claim jumpers who mined inside the church in the 1930’s and to the current committee members who exhibit the best bell ringing technique. We hope you enjoy our church and the people who support it.
